FEMALE INFERTILITY AND THE CAUSE IN YORUBIC MEDICINE

According to Yorubic Medicine, the causes of female infertility are many and the treatments in Yorubic Medicine are also based on these manifold causes.

          The causes

1.     Menstrual problems:In some cases, women with infertility experience problems with their periodic menstrual cycle. This problem can be irregular menstruation scanty menstrual flow (hypomenorrhea), menstrual cessation (amenorrhea or absence of menses), excessive menstruation (poly menorrhea), painful menstruation (dysmenorrhea), blackish-red menstruation, foul-smelling menstruation. Some of the herbs we use to treat these case in yorubic medicine are Nauclealatifolia (egbesi), khayasenegalensis (oganho), Sorghum bicolor  (poroporo),Lawsonia inermis (lali), etc.

2.     Sperm discharge via Vagina after sexual intercourse (Eda): In Yorubic Medicine, this condition is divided in two, eda Idubule (sperm discharge while lying down) and eda iduro (sperm discharge while standing up). The sperm of the husband is discharge back through the vagina after sexual intercourse. The herbs used for its treatment are Jatropha spp (Lapalapa),Kigelia African (pandoro), e.t.c.

3.     Swollen breasts before menstruation (Somuroro): Some women experience swollen breasts a day or 2 days to their menstruation. The breasts would swell up and the nipple area would be smooth unusually. This is not known to medical science. Hormonal imbalance can be a causative factor for this condiction. Herbs used to tackle this condition are Kigelia Africana (Pandoro),Cassia alata (Asunwon), etc.

4.     Blocked fallopian tube (Ile omo todi):Women with this condition may find it hard to get pregnant especially if the two fallopian tubes are blocked. It prevents sperm from meeting with female egg to start the process of fertilization. Herbs used are (Alliandria portoricensis (Tude), Curligo pilosa (Epaikun), etc.

5.     Infertility worms (Aran aboyunje): according to Yorubic Medicine, there are three types of worm that can cause infertility in women, we call them aranginisa(Ginisaworm),  latanlatan (latanlatan worm), and araneru (Eruworm). Two of them would not allow the fertilized egg to develop at all before they eat it up but the last one,araneru will wait for 4 to 7 months before destroying the pregnancy and therefore, causingmiscarriages. 6.     STDS (Awon aisan ibalopo):Sexual transmitted infections or sexually transmitted diseases like gonorrhea, staphylococcus, syphilis, PID, vaginal candidiasis (Toilet disease) etc. can cause infertility in women.
