PILE AND EXTERNAL HEMORRHOID AND YORUBIC MEDICINE

Pile (Jedi) is theinflammation of the veins of the internal part of rectum. The Yoruba word for it ‘Jedi’ literarily means buttock eater

External hemorrhoid (Idi yiyo) is the inflammation of the veins just outside the rectum. The word ‘Idi’yiyo, means buttock removing.

Symptoms of pile/external hemorrhoid according to Yorubic Medicine

-         Bleeding in the stool (Igbe eje)

Causes in Yorubic Medicine

Yorubic Medicine emphasizes two causes of pile and external hemorrhoid. The first one is the concept of ‘onje to dun’. Literarily, it means a food that is too sweet. In Yorubic Medicine, this is referred to most foods with too much sugar(especially refined sugar) in them. Such foods are believed to cause pile and when continude would one day lead to external hemorrhoid.

The second concept is the concept of ‘Ijekuje,’ which literarily means wrong eating. Most of the time, Yorubic Medicine practitioners refer to junks and simple sugar foods such as white bread, etc.when they talk about ijekuje. They often refer to refined or fast food products that are no longer natural and are laden with excess of refined sugars, salt, etc.

Treatment of pile and external hemorrhoid in Yorubic Medicine

In Yorubic Medicine, the treatment of pile depends on the nature of that very pile. We have Jedi Lasan (Ordinary pile) and ako Jedi (Severe pile with back pain). There are herbal formulations for these two types of pile.For ordinary pile (Jedi Lasan), we usually prepare herbal formulations that would not lead to stooling but the ones that would stop its manifestation entirely. 

For the severe pile (Ako Jedi), we prepare herbal formulations that would also help the body to get rid of it through purgation.

In both piles, the formulations are either in agbo (decoction) form or agunmu (powder) form.

We usually use herbs such as abere (Picralima nitida), asunwon (Cassia alata)etc to prepare these formulations in Yorubic Medicine.

In the case of external hemorrhoid, in Yorubic Medicine, we prepare agbo (decoction), powder (agunmu), ose (soap), and cream (ori) for the patient to take orally or apply externally.
