ULCERS (OGBENU) AND TREATMENT IN YORUBIC MEDICINE

Ulcers occur when there is an imbalance between the protective factor (mucus and bicarbonate) and aggressive factors (acid and pepsin).

The Yorubic Medicine name ‘ogbenu’ stems from the fact that there is an internal wound.  ‘Ogbe’ is the word for wound. An external ulcer would only be referred to as Ogbe (wound) but an internal wound Ulcer either stomach or cheat Ulcer would be referred to as Ogbenu, internal wound.

Treatment of Ulcers in Yorubic Medicine

In Yorubic Medicine, we first ascertain the nature of the condition and then start treatment with food therapy, herbal therapy and dietary advice to the patient.

          For external ulcers, we prepare external formulations in powder form to dust on the ulcer, cream form to apply on the ulcer, decoction form to use to bath the affected part, soap to use to wash the place, etc. we also prepare formulations for internal or oral consumption to aid in the healing of the external ulcers.
