MALE INFERTILITY AND YORUBIC MEDICINE

Male infertility is a condition in which the man (husband) is unable to impregnate his wife after 1 year (12 moths) of marriage. It carries 35% of infertility in couples and that of female infertility , also carries 35%. The rest are either both husband and wife or unknown cause.

                      Cause of male infertility according to YorubicMedicine

1.        Eyin tiko to ninu ato tabi ato to san ju (low sperm count, Oligospermia

Eggs not enough in the seminal fluid): if the sperm cells are not enough to get to the female egg and fertilize it, pregnancy will not take place. A seminal fluid with fever than 20 million sperm/ml is regarded as oligospemia or low sperm count. For this condition, YorubicMedicine practioners use ogunafato, a name for a class of sperm boosting medicines, in which different formulations exist. Some of the popular herbs we useare esowerepe (Mucunapneriens), omuaja (Cnestisferruginia),ogedeagbagba (Musa SPP), etc.

2.     Ato ti ko ni eyin ninu(seminal fluid without egg, azoospermia):Azoospermia is a condition where no sperm cell is present in the seminal fluid (Semen). There are two types of azoospermia, there is obstructive azoospermia and non-obstructive azoospermia. In obstructive, an obstruction may have been present at birth or may have occurred as a result of an infection or severe trauma to the testicles, therefore, blocking the flow of the sperm. Vasectomy or corrective surgery can be used successfully for this condition. In non-obstructive azoospemia, there is a very low production or no production of sperm in the testicles. About 50% male with non-obstructive azoospermia have some sperm production in one or the two testicles.

In Yorubic Medicine, we use herbs such as ajekofole (Coltozambesicus), osunsun (Carpolobialutea), etc.

3.     Ato to lora (slow sperm, low sperm motility or asthenozoospemia): It is a common problem seen in cases of male factor infertility.

Yorubic Medicine herbs used to tackle low sperm motility (asthenozoospermia) are esun (Dioscorea dumetorum), akika (Lecamiodiscus cupaniodes), etc.

4.     Ato tiko da (bad sperm, abnormal morphologies or teratospermia):This is a condition in which the shape of sperm cells have been altered. More than 70% of the sperm in the ejaculates have abnormal morphologies.

Yorubic Medicine uses herbs such as eyin-olobe (Phyllanthus amanis), werepe (Mucunasloanei), etc. to correct this this addition.

5.     Globozoospermia (round-headed, acrosoneless sperm): it is a rare disorder characterized by round-headed, acrosomeless sperm cells.

6.     Aisan iba lopo (Sexual transmitted diseases): Conditions likes gonorrhea, staphylococcus, syphilis, etc. can affect the fertility of a man. They can either lead to oligospermia (low sperm count) or azoospermia (no sperm count) if not taken care of immediately.

It increases temperature in the testicles thus causing altered spermatogenesis, Leydig’scell dysfunction, therefore, leading to male infertility.
